Thoughts:Adjacent color experiment day two! I’m moderately happy with how this outfit turned out. The cardigan tie is new for me, and while retro it doesn’t feel quite in-line with my style. My sister commented that this outfit looked conservative for me; she was clearly feeling the same thing I was. That said, I think tying the gingham shirt in a little knot WOULD be in-line with my style.
This pretty necklace (and a pair of matching earrings, not worn here) was sent to me by a friend from YLF after she posted a few orphan accessories she was offering to send to new homes. I didn’t post about any of them in time, but she offered to send me something she thought was my style and she’s spot on! I love the peacocky colors, the natural materials, and the fact that it’s handmade. Thank you so much Sona!
Behind the outfit:I was in a retro mood today so I thought it’d be fun to wear my vintage midi skirt, which I love pairing with gingham. Since I needed to wear this cardigan for the adjacent color challenge, I had to find a way to reign in some of the volume so there would be only one voluminous half; with my retro mood I thought I’d try tying the ends up, though it feels a bit more summery than wintery to me.
Then I got a bit stumped on the footwear. As you can see by the snow behind me, it’s simply too cold for anything besides boots or heavy tights. This skirt is wool, so it’s definitely winter-weight, but the top half is just so springy looking that all of my heavier tights (which are all dark, and either opaque or sweater) made the bottom half look over-the-top heavy and very seasonally mis-matched with the top.
So then I tried these boots, which are my sleekest pair (OK my Miz Mooz xmas gift boots are sleeker, but I still haven’t waterproofed them yet ><). They looked so very dark in the outfit; I liked how the lighter taupe Miz Mooz boots looked so much better, but just couldn’t bear to get them water stained. I hemmed and hawed quite a while before deciding this black pair looked OK because 1) there is black fiber in the skirt, 2) they bookend my hair, and 3) I added a little extra dose of black with my watch and the necklace is dark.

Thoughts:Another outfit I thought would be great to wear to the Seattle YLF meetup tomorrow. I almost changed into something else, I liked it so much, but I did wear this skirt at the last meetup. So I’ll have to think of something else!
I know midi lengths are trending and, while I do like some longer skirt/dress lengths, my one and only midi is this vintage skirt which I’ve had for many, many years. I don’t wear it very often because of its super high-waistedness, but really should be giving it more time this season while it’s on trend. I would love to find another midi skirt in a bright color for spring/summer, though!
Behind the outfit:This outfit started with the skirt. It’s quite cold today, so I thought I’d do a 70s inspired look and pair it with a turtleneck and boots. After considering each of my turtleneck sweaters, I thought it’d be fun to wear this winter white one (which is almost too short for pants) along with these black boots for a light-to-dark, top-to-bottom gradient. Unfortunately for the gradient smoothness, it felt overly feminine for me. I tried several belts before settling on this one (including a bright turquoise one which could be fun for a different outfit, will have to keep that in mind); the black echoes the boots and my hair, the contrast isn’t high enough to completely destroy the gradient effect, and, of course, it adds a nice bit of toughness. Initially I had a long brass pendant on but after much flip-floppery I decided the outfit looked stronger without it, and that also helped keep the gradient more in tact. I still felt it needed a strong piece of jewelry though, so I added these doorknocker earrings; the black and brass both echo other colors in the outfit, and are another more modern element (along with the belt).
With the long skirt, I decided to wear my long wool coat. I still had the turquoise belt in mind, and since a bit of the skirt peeks out I chose my teal and brown scarf; I left it tucked in because I’m in a clean lines mood today. Black gloves and purse to match the boots, because sometimes you just want to match!
Off topic and for fun:Last month my husband and I bought a painting off Etsy which finally arrived today (though we’d been hoping it would arrive by Friend Thanksgiving), and it’s really awesome! It’s four square panels, each 16”x16”, making the full painting 64”; we’ll be spacing them about an inch apart as well. The color is just as I had hoped, though the overall painting is much darker than I expected (it’s brightened up quite a bit for the photos below). Thoughts: I took the day off to get chores and cleaning done since we were out of town this weekend, and was musing on what to wear in the evening to my husband’s step-dad’s birthday dinner when I got a call from friends asking if I wanted to go to lunch with them. I put this together (very quickly) for lunch, but then decided it was also good for the dinner. I think it’s kind of fun that it’s dressy on bottom and more casual on top; it was casual enough for lunch, and dressy enough for dinner.
Behind the outfit:I didn’t have a lot of time (10-15 minutes at most) so you’d think I’d use one of my fall-back formulas, or at least something simpler. But for some reason I really felt like wearing these culottes today, I have only worn them once or twice. Those times I paired with my brown slouchy buckle boots, so today I thought I’d pair with my sleekest boots (which are still slouchy, heh). That made the bottom half too dressy for a casual lunch at a brewery, so I decided to add a tee and denim jacket to dress it all down. I knew I would be taking the jacket off to eat (the denim is a bit too thick to be comfortable while eating), so I added the cardigan; the cardigan is quite a bit longer than the jacket, but I rather like it. Thoughts: There’s a fun “Dress the Decade” challenge going on over on YLF; each day for a week, we wear outfits inspired by a different decade. I missed the first two days (30s/40s and 50s) due to travel/travel recovery but I’ll make those up next week. So today, I’m hopping in with the 1960s! This is one of my favorite fashion decades, and I decided to play with mod/go-go, styles I don’t sport often (though I really like mod).
One of the benefits of challenges like this is that it inspires me to use pieces that don’t get worn often. I bought this dress back in March, and this is the first time I’ve worn it; I can probably count on one hand the times I’ve worn these leggings (white is hard to style!) as well as these boots (why!? look how cute they are!). And they probably would never have all been paired together without the challenge.
And one extra benefit, a compliment while at the grocery store!
Behind the outfit:This outfit formed around the dress, with the boots getting added almost as quickly. I was originally going to wear black tights, but the look felt too heavy for the 60s mod vibe I was going for. The bold, graphic colors of the era has always appealed to me (think Pop Art), so going with the white leggings over nude microfishnets was a no-brainer (and as graphic and high contrast as it gets).
