Worn to: birthday day off work! Mariner’s game, dessert at Purple
Thoughts:For my birthday today my very sweet husband surprised me with a killer tote! I’ve been eying it for a while; it comes in sooo many delicious colors, I had the hardest time choosing between the emerald, cobalt, or tangerine. Very happy with this emerald, it’s such a gorgeous, brilliant color. We both took the day off and went to a baseball game for some relaxing entertainment (don’t worry, my choice! too bad they lost 0-3 though), followed by delicious birthday dessert.
Behind the outfit:Today’s outfit came together out of a short list of necessities: I wanted an outfit with the Ms colors, flat comfy shoes because I knew we’d be walking quite a bit, and pants if possible. This new turquoise sweater isn’t quite the Ms shade, but it was close enough for me! It’s actually the same sweater as yesterday’s but in a size down. Because of that it loses some length, making it better suited for skirts than pants; I got around that by layering a navy tank underneath for some extra length (and a fun light-to-dark tonal gradient!). And since I’m trying to wear my jeans less I chose my black trousers instead of black skinny jeans. Added the pearl necklace for a pop of lightness (which is also echoed by the bits of exposed skin, and the white watch), and popped on my brown faux leather jacket along with a scarf for an extra layer of warmth while at the ballpark.

Worn to: @ home pie/coffee/baseball, gardening, Scuttlebutt, Lowes
Behind the outfit:A basic weekend outfit using my favorite “spiff up a tee" outfit formula modified for a colder day, subbing in a sweater for the tee. Layering up the necklaces (or adding just one statement necklace) and popping on a jacket takes the outfit from basic casual to pulled-together casual. And if this outfit needed to be further dressed up, simply swapping these casual flat boots for dressier footwear will pull the dressiness factor up yet another level, as would a dressier jacket. An easy outfit base that can go from lounging to Lowes to lunch:
Base outfit: sweater + jeans + statement necklace
Pulled-together casual: + casual footwear + casual jacket
Smart-casual: + dressy footwear + casual jacket
Dressy smart-casual: + dressy footwear + dressy jacket

Thoughts:Our good friend treated my husband and I to lunch and a supercross event down in Seattle today for hubby’s birthday. We had a great time, and some great weather to boot!

More fun photos of the day can be found here.
Behind the outfit:I so enjoyed wearing this dress for a motorcycle ride last month, I was more than happy to don it again! This time I decided to wear my brown boots because I much prefer to have a little ankle coverage (it was scary in just the pumps last time!). Also because they’re one of my most comfortable shoes to walk around all day in and, well, that was a big part of the day. I popped my brown leather jacket on as an extra layer to tie in the boots and keep it from looking too earthy, but happily the weather was warm enough that I didn’t need it until close to sundown!

Thoughts:Somehow my sweater shrunk when I washed it a couple days ago! I have washed it several times before, always the same way, with cold water and air dried. I’m hoping I can gently stretch the slouch back into it but I don’t have high hopes for that working. I’ll have to experiment with the sweater to see how to make it work for me if I can’t get it to stretch back to its normal shape. Not sure how much I like this tighter fit, it really emphasizes the dolman sleeve which isn’t the best sleeve shape for my strong shoulder line (the looser body helped to mitigate that). Sad.
I wasn’t really planning on going anywhere or seeing anyone today, so I was in my PJs when our friends stopped by for a short visit after going out for a ride. I therefore threw this together quite quickly, and am pretty pleased with how it turned out! This is actually a take on my spring color palette formula, with the ivory and color (green) only in the scarf. That little formula has really been a great tool when I need a little outfit inspiration!

Thoughts:Hope you’re all having a great weekend! Since I’ve been busy crafting for my Etsy shop, I am just starting to look over my spring wardrobe. For some reason it’s been hard to get inspired with our unseasonably cold weather, when usually this is when I go overboard with my dreams of sunny days. Part of the issue is that I actually like my spring/summer wardrobe MORE than my fall/winter wardrobe which isn’t good since fall is the dominant season where I live; on the plus side, I feel like I don’t have to do as much to get my spring/summer wardrobe ready to go. Deciding to lighten up for spring early has helped get me started thinking about what I do want to do, though, and I have made a few purchases already (some of which you’ve seen): loafers, watercolor printed blouse, bright orange blazer, teal blazer, a couple transitional dresses, and several bright, colorful printed scarves. In addition I also recently picked up a couple new lip colors which I plan to review soon!
Also, things are moving along nicely for my Etsy shop reopening, though there has been a bit of a setback regarding my handcrafted nail polishes which I hope to get sorted soon. In the meantime, I’ve got a few more pretty soon-to-be-earrings cab previews to share with you guys which I created last night:

That left one is one of my favorites, it’s got so much depth and color. For more, click here!
Behind the outfit:Today I wanted something simple to run errands with. I started with the boots and jeans (love these two together!), then decided to sandwich the black with more taupe. After adding the tee, I knew I’d need a jacket since I don’t really like to wear plain tees on their own. I tried a couple of my jackets, and had almost decided to wear my ink blue tweed moto when I gave this brown jacket a try. And was totally digging the different shades of browns in the outfit, up to three with the jacket. I chose the brass pendant and earrings to add to the brown tones, and then in honor of St. Patrick’s day added a blue and green scarf for the outerwear (and of course my green nails) ^^

Thoughts:Busy day today! First off, some fashion. I picked up some plain foam insoles from Walgreens today, and have to say WHY DIDN”T I DO THIS SOONER!? I put a pair in these boots, which are already one of my most comfortable pairs of shoes, and now they’re even better. For, like, $1.50 a pair? Yes please! I am definitely going to buy a few more for various shoes that have the extra room, especially my taller heels.
So we went out with our good friend Adam and his family for his birthday today, and had a great time! After a delicious seafood dinner, we went to an Everett Silvertips hockey game (quick insider tidbit: I LOVE hockey, baseball, and football!). Seattle doesn’t have an NHL team (*sob*), but we do have several minor league teams including one here in my own town. Whenever they play against Seattle, the games are super duper awesome, and tonight was no exception!

The game finished at 3-3 in regulation, went into overtimes, and ultimately to a shootout (my favorite!) with Everett taking the win! I took some video of the shootout shots for fun and mooshed ‘em all together with a slow-mo repeat of the winning shot:

Love that winning spin shot for Everett! You can tell we all had far too much fun ^^

Afterwards David and I went to Chopstix, a dueling piano bar, for a drink before heading home. We also saw THE COOLEST (nerd alert) car, covered in floppies and firmies!!

Behind the outfit:I don’t sport black-on-black outfits often, and one of my favorite ways to break up all the black is to mix in brown. Today’s outfit started with the sweater and jeans, because it’s a very casual base that could hide any grime I might incur over the day’s festivities. I added this particular pair of boots for a couple reasons: the brown color (to soften the black), the wedge heel makes them a bit dressy, and the fact that they’re synthetic so if they got mucked up at the game I could clean easily. I needed a jacket for the hockey rink, so I chose this leather jacket to keep things casual-cool, but if I had a color other than brown (gray, taupe, cream or red come to mind) I would probably like that more; I don’t mind the matchiness of the brown with the brown boots, mostly because they’re not the same shade of brown.
From there I added my pearl studs to add a wee bit of lightness, then this brass pendant to play with the browns. I chose this scarf to work both indoors and outdoors (wasn’t sure how cold the arena would be), and since I’m going with super matchy matchy, this one definitely fits the bill since it’s black, gray, and brown floral ^^

Thoughts:Isn’t this color palette just gorgeous? I LOVE this soft yet crisp combo, it’ll be so great for spring! One of my favorite parts about it is that since it’s all neutral except for the orange, it can actually be adapted to whatever color is hot each season. This year it’s orange and emerald, and when next year is something else that’s an easy adjustment: brown + taupe + gray + cream + bright trendy color.
Earlier this month I stated that I wanted to limit the brown items I have in my wardrobe. This is a great example of the browns I DO want to have. Two of the four browns, the boots and the jacket, are “leather” (faux in this case); one of the browns, in the scarf, is the chocolate brown I specifically wanted to limit, and the scarf also has tan which I don’t plan to limit; and the last brown, the tee, is taupe which doesn’t quite fall into the category I want to limit. The main reason I like these particular browns is that they don’t blend into my hair, which keeps me from becoming a giant wall of brown, and also that they aren’t overly earthy.
Behind the outfit:This outfit started with the turtleneck. I haven’t worn it in a while, and wanted to get a couple more wears in while it’s still cold. This sweater is too short for pants, so I needed to find a longer lower layer. Because it’s white, I worried about what I could possibly layer underneath that wouldn’t look funny showing through. My first thought was that I didn’t have anything long sleeved that was a light enough color, but then I thought of this tee. It isn’t currently part of my regular wardrobe (I moved it to loungewear when I decided to wear less tees), but after this outfit I’m definitely going to bring it back in as a layering piece. You can’t tell with the scarf there, but it works particularly well because of the high crew neck.
From there the rest of the outfit kind of fell into place on its own. I liked the lightness of the top, so chose my gray skinnies to keep things low contrast (the only “icy” color here in a sea of “autumn”). Then I decided to play up the warm side of the taupe tee, so I added brown boots and my brown faux leather jacket. It felt oddly matched, so I perused my scarves for some additional color; initially I grabbed my black and brown floral scarf, but that looked too matchy-matchy and the black was so heavy looking (probably would be fine if my hair was up, though). I also tried my light brown dotty scarf, but it felt too whimsical for the outfit. So then I tried this infinity scarf and it was just perfect! The small shot of bright orange was just what the outfit needed, the brown being mismatched against all the others fixed all my matching concerns, and the silk adds a wonderful additional textural interest.
The last detail I wanted to point out is that I am wearing a bold lip with this, and love how it looks against the soft colors. I used a bright coral lip gloss I usually wear in spring/summer for this outfit, and coupled with my face being framed in the darkest colors in the outfit (hair and scarf), it really brings the attention up to my face. All in all I adore this outfit, even though it’s considerably softer looking than what I usually wear.

Worn to: Hallmark, QFC, Jack-in-the-Box, my folks’ for dad’s birthday dinner/presents/new year’s
Sweater: Ann Taylor (outlet)Jacket, jeans, necklace: TargetHeels: Jessica Simpson “Brenda” (gift)Peal earrings: anniversary giftWatch: Fossil (gift)Coat: Weatherproof (gift)Purse: Michael Kors
Behind the outfit:My dad’s birthday is today, so we have always spent the evening at my folks’ (no New Year’s parties for me, another reason my holiday capsule is nonexistent), though when my sis and I were young we went to the Space Needle fireworks show in Seattle a couple times. My mom celebrates Christmas in early January, so we also use this time as Christmas and presents with my folks. Coming up with this outfit was like mixing Thanksgiving and in-laws over for Christmas needs: something a little loose to make room for the giant dinner my mom would be preparing, something a bit dressy, and something I could relax in.
I’m still really feeling cranberry as a festive color this season, and since this sweater is a bit loose it satisfies need #1 nicely (and the fine gauge helps make it a bit dressier). I didn’t want the outfit to be very dark, so I chose to wear these light gray jeans (jeans helps satisfy need #3), which I echoed with the gray pearl necklace to add even more lightness to the top half and add a bit more dressiness.
Then I was a bit torn on what to wear on my feet. I knew I wouldn’t have my shoes on inside my parents’ home, so boots felt a little too fussy. As I was looking over my shoes, I got the idea of pairing red with cranberry which really appealed to me, but it isn’t nearly warm enough to wear heels/flats without socks (which is my preference) and I knew I’d want to have socks on for the evening anyway. So since I had to wear socks with the heels, I chose a pair that’s gray, but a shade darker than my jeans; it helps make them look deliberate but still low contrast.
The last thing the outfit needed was a jacket, which adds some good structure and is a useful layer to keep at a comfortable temperature. Since I’ve really enjoyed pairing this cranberry sweater with brown/cognac this season (as seen here and here), this brown faux leather jacket seemed like a no brainer BUT I wasn’t sure how well it would work with the gray. Happily when I put it on it looked great; I think this is due to 1) the other brown element, my hair, being near it, and 2) the top half being warmer-toned than the bottom.
Exciting fashion xmas gifts (part 2):
an oversized rose gold Fossil watch that I’ve been eyeing for months (thanks sis!!)
pretty Southwestern jewelry: 2 dangly earrings and a bracelet
cash to spend on clothing of my choice ^^

Worn to: Hallmark, QFC, Jack-in-the-Box, my folks’ for dad’s birthday dinner/presents/new year’s

Sweater: Ann Taylor (outlet)
Jacket, jeans, necklace: Target
Heels: Jessica Simpson “Brenda” (gift)
Peal earrings: anniversary gift
Watch: Fossil (gift)
Coat: Weatherproof (gift)
Purse: Michael Kors

Behind the outfit:
My dad’s birthday is today, so we have always spent the evening at my folks’ (no New Year’s parties for me, another reason my holiday capsule is nonexistent), though when my sis and I were young we went to the Space Needle fireworks show in Seattle a couple times.

Thoughts: Looks like there are two posts for today! I wasn’t expecting to do anything today (hence the long, insightful earlier post ^^), but my husband and I ended up feeling lazy to cook so we went out for dinner (at a really, really casual gamer’s pub). Since it was short notice I put together a quick outfit using my favorite spiff-up-a-tee formula; because I’m slower than my husband at dressing, whenever he is waiting for me I get flustered and can’t come up with a good outfit. I have to say having my favorite formulas tagged here is proving to be a great help for those days!
Off topic and for fun:My husband went and picked up the new kitchen furniture and set it all up! It looks beautiful, and fits our French Country home style perfectly (and all of our kitchen stuff that sat boxed in the garage for the last couple years because there wasn’t enough room).

Thoughts: For day 2 of the mini-vacation, my husband and I took it easy (it is a Sunday, after all!). We started with breakfast at the hotel, then decided against walking around Anacortes because the weather had turned grizzly (it stormed something serious all night!). After breakfast we drove home, watched football (an amazing win for the Seahawks over the Ravens!!), and enjoyed some General Sunday Laziness. All in all, a wonderful and fun weekend!
(Do pardon the goofy left photo, my husband was busy making me laugh!)
Behind the outfit:As I said in yesterday’s post, all I changed between the two outfits was the shirt and necklace, and then also added the yellow belt. The two looks are different enough for a casual weekend, and certainly took very little space. These outfits were derived using my flying outfit formula, which translates nicely for car travel as well.
I think the outfit works much better without the jacket than yesterday’s did (both look fine with the jacket). This confirms my feeling that I’m growing less fond of tees; this blouse certainly has more structure than a tee, and honestly, is just as comfortable. It also works better because the top has no black, so the boots don’t look like a random brown element in an otherwise gray/black outfit; and I think the yellow helps tie the brown in as well.
(I’m also noticing that I’ve been dressing a bit.. earthier? sportier? Eddie Bauer? on the weekends the past month or two.)
