Behind the outfit:A basic weekend outfit using my favorite “spiff up a tee” outfit formula modified for a colder day, subbing in a sweater for the tee. Layering up the necklaces (or adding just one statement necklace) and popping on a jacket takes the outfit from basic casual to pulled-together casual. And if this outfit needed to be further dressed up, simply swapping these casual flat boots for dressier footwear will pull the dressiness factor up yet another level, as would a dressier jacket. An easy outfit base that can go from lounging to Lowes to lunch:
Base outfit: sweater + jeans + statement necklace
Pulled-together casual: + casual footwear + casual jacket
Smart-casual: + dressy footwear + casual jacket

Thoughts, or “How I Got Stuck Gardening In Heels”When my husband and I were leaving to have breakfast this morning, we found that someone had run into our mailbox (and I mean RUN INTO) and destroyed it. So after breakfast we had to go get a new one. While at the home improvement store, we also decided to pick up some pretty annuals to plant in the yard for a boost of color including the gerber daisies you can see behind me and the lovelies behind the light there (I forget what those are).
Once we got home I told my husband that I wanted to take my outfit photos and then change before planting, and he gave me the “I’ll be done with this by the time you’re done with all of that” look. So I planted flowers for an hour in my trench and 3” heels (took the scarf and purse off, at least). Ladies if you want a good calf workout, try gardening in heels (I jest, but my calves are feeling like I ran for an hour!). I promise my “normal” gardening attire is less flashy ^^
At least the final result is pretty:
Behind the outfit:Today I was in the mood for a little denim-on-denim, but not a lot of denim-on-denim so I layered this brown sweater (which I could probably nickname my “weekend sweater”) over a chambray blouse. Plus adding a button-up underneath dresses it up just the right amount. Gray heels and white watch to keep the look light, along with pushing the sleeves up; the little peek of skin on the foot and exposed forearms help keep this from looking too cold weathered. A quick, relaxed outfit for breakfast. I reach for this slouchy sweater a lot on the weekends, then decide against wearing it because it’s brown. I think I’m going to look for a couple of these in bright happy colors, and a lightweight gauge for spring weekend outfits! They’d pair well with any of my slim jeans, and will look great with white jeans if I can manage to find myself a pair this year; they’d also be really cute with shorts+boots on warmer spring days. I like my fitted sweaters just as much, but I have to say I really love the extra slouch of oversized sweaters on the weekend. And, as an added bonus, they are also great for cooler summer evenings!

Thoughts:I took an unexpected nap while snuggling with my kitty today (he’s not usually a snuggler!), and snapped my outfit photos shortly after waking up so please pardon the sleepy eyes. My hair has continued to feel settled in, which is great! I’m feeling less inclined to shorten the layers now, though I may still do it as a transitional ‘do going into spring.

Thoughts:Decided I felt well enough to go to the Holiday Alefest (of course), and we had a fantastic time (we’ve been going for years)! My husband and I were one of the driving vehicles, and two of our friends drove with us. We loaded up on candy, snacks, and water for the 3.5 hour drive. Once in Portland we dropped our friends off at their hotel, drove over to ours to check in and drop our stuff and car off, and met up with all of our friends (12 of us!) at the Alefest itself.
We spent several hours at the Alefest, and there were tons of great winter beers to try (lots of wood aged beer this year, it was definitely one of the major trends). Happily I was able to try all the ones I wanted to (I made a list on the drive down!). I am also happy to report that I saw a lot of stylishly dressed ladies there, and a fabulous variety of boots. Afterwards we walked to Kelly’s Olympian for a short stop before dinner to regroup, then we all walked over to Deschutes Brewery for a yummy dinner!
After dinner we walked to Ground Kontrol to play some pinball and arcade games. I got myself on the top 10 scores for both Asteroids AND Tempest (woo!). Big fun day with a big fun group! Lastly, a photo of the beautiful view out of our hotel window which was on the 19th floor.
Behind the outfit:There were a lot of outside requirements for this weekend’s outfits. For one, my husband and I pack really lightly when we travel; since this trip is just one night away, we only brought a backpack with all of our stuff in it. For two, since we drove down to Portland I needed outfits that would be comfortable for 3+ hours in the car. For three, today’s outfit also needed to be comfortable enough to stand and walk in for several hours, as well as be able to go from car to cold outside to warm tent. And lastly, of course, both outfits needed to be stylish :)
I started with the footwear; I picked these boots because they are one of my most comfortable pairs, and are one of my few all day walking shoes (something I really need to remedy). I haven’t been very good at varying my outfit silhouettes lately and am feeling a bit bored of skinnies+boots (*gasp*), so instead of skinny jeans I thought it’d be fun to wear my wool shorts with sweater tights. Since it’s cold out I wanted to wear a sweater, and after trying a few I ultimately decided to wear this brown sweater because one, the brown echoes the boots (though the top is cool and boots are warm), and two, I liked how the slouchiness looked with the shorts/tights/boots. Thoughts: Ahhhh I am feeling much less stressed about Thanksgiving! Today we went and got a great coffee table and floor lamp, and also hit up Target and Fred Meyer for some pretty decorative things. The front room is looking good!
Anyway… After not using this camera for a couple months, I must say that I forgot how rosy the photos with this camera are! That or my eyes see things more yellowy. I wanted to leave some of the background in today’s photo because look how pretty the leaves are!
Behind the outfit:The last couple riding-styled outfits I’ve worn have had a lot of structural integrity, so today I felt like doing a softer riding inspired look. Started with the jeans and boots; these straight leg jeans are a bit too relaxed to tuck into boots, so I definitely need to get a slim pair for that. I was in an earthy, slouchy mood, and this sweater is great for those days. Thoughts: Last month Angie posted about how oversized sweaters are trending strongly this season. Personally I have a hard time with this one because I spent the 5th-8th grades wearing oversized 80s-printed sweaters, black stirrup leggings, and sneakers. The new silhouettes are pretty fun though, swingy and voluminous all over. I much prefer these shapes to the ones I was wearing back in the early 90s! I’ve not yet decided if I want to add one to my wardrobe, but I will seriously consider it if the right one crosses my path; I’m especially liking the ones with asymmetrical hems.
Behind the outfit:The starting point for today’s outfit was this oversized sweater outfit formula. My sweater is a boyfriend style sweater, but I pulled it down to pseudo-tunic length; I then went back and layered a black button-up shirt underneath the sweater because pulling it down made the neckline way too low for work. Initially I had my black skinny jeans on but the whole thing felt too dark. Then I remembered I had a new chunky red beret yet to be worn and it was raining, so I went with the red skinnies instead (I’m pretty smitten with the matching red jeans and beret).
I chose brown pumps, but in retrospect following the original formula and wearing boots would probably have looked more seasonally appropriate. What can I say, I love my skinnies+heels! I added the black watch and purse to pick up on the black shirt, though non-black items would have also worked; I liked the idea of repeating the black because I was already doing the matching thing with the beret+skinnies.
