Thoughts:Even though I don’t have a lot of pattern nor pattern variety in my wardrobe, I really love all the hectic pattern mixing that’s going on this season. I find myself drawn to wearing pattern more in warmer weather, but didn’t add a lot of print to my spring/summer wardrobe last year so I hope to add more this year. I don’t expect to move away from my love of geometric and abstract prints, and would especially like to find a couple printed blouses and a printed blazer this season!
Behind the outfit:Some subtle pattern mixing today, tonal stripes and leopard print (ok, subtle for me). Feeling a little gloomy today so I ended up with a dark outfit. I started with the cardigan, and got the idea to pair with this tee because they were sitting next to each other on the shelf. I decided to tone the mix down by pairing with black jeans and boots.
I feel like this mix is subtle because both are on the smaller side, both have the same colors (though the cardigan has little bits of white), and both of those colors are low contrast with each other. And then the rest of the outfit is black, which is a major color in both patterns and also low contrast. The brightest thing in this outfit is my skin (and the kitty ^^), which works nicely to bring the focus up to my face.
For the outerwear, I decided I should add some brightness since it’s just so very gloomy out. I thought about my emerald rain coat, but decided to go with the casual vibe and brighten to the max with this ivory puffer instead. I used my scarf and purse for a shot of color. Thoughts:Wearing these jeans+boots makes anything I pair with them feel instantly awesomer. Take this simple jeans-and-tee outfit; the boots help elevate the look really nicely, and the jacket does the same. Still not wearing my jackets as much as I probably should, and still trying to get back to wearing them. This was actually a pretty quick outfit, and is a more subdued, booted take on my favorite spiff-up-a-tee formula though it’s more work-like than weekend-like for me. Thoughts:Today Angie posted a cute outfit which I loved so much I wanted to copy it right away! I love mixing dressy and casual elements in my outfits, so this is right up my alley. I usually mix them all up, especially since I’m severely lacking casual footwear, but I think there’s something so chic about the way the way Angie’s outfit is dressy on top and casual on bottom. I’ve been wanting to add a pair of Cons to my wardrobe for a while, and this outfit really makes want to pick up a red or gray pair next time I make it up to the outlet mall!
On an unrelated note, I just found out that my awesome hair stylist, Tan, whom I’ve been seeing for the last 5 years is no longer cutting hair! I am borderline depressed about this, you guys. He was so fantastic. I could, literally, just tell him to do something fabulous…. and he would! And look at how long my hair is!? I suppose this is what I get for putting off getting my hair cut for *cough* 2 years (hey, I was going for a super boho thing!). I am SO not looking forward to having to find a new stylist. Thoughts: For our 6th wedding anniversary (today!), my husband and I decided to take a mini-vacation and spend the weekend up in Anacortes (a couple hours away). We took the ferry over to Whidbey Island and had breakfast/brunch at The Braeburn in Langley. After that, continued along and drove through Deception Pass but it was very cold so we only walked halfway across the bridge; beautiful view with the cold crisp air (see, this is why I wanted my camera! also, I keep forgetting that I can use my cell phone…).
We stayed at The Majestic Inn and Spa in Anacortes, which is a cool old building with lots of stairways and interesting hallways. We even found a staircase that took us all the way to the highest point of the building, a small dining room with just enough space for a single dining table set for 4 and 360 views of the city/water (noted for next time!). Started the evening at the hotel’s lounge, and after a drink went down to Rockfish Brewery for dinner, then off to The Brown Lantern where we both had too much to drink and entirely too much fun together ;) [love my hubby! <3]
Behind the outfit:For this weekend I wanted a simple travel capsule that 1) is comfortable for both sitting and walking, 2) fits into a backpack along with my husband’s clothes, and 3) my husband would like (or at the least, wouldn’t hate). The key to #3 is simplicity (he doesn’t like layers) and no waist surrender. For #2 I’ll simply be switching the shirt and necklace, and adding a colorful belt. Easy peasy packing!
I do like how this outfit looks with the jacket much more than without; partially because I think I’m growing less fond of tees, and partially because without the jacket the brown boots aren’t really tied into the outfit well (the purse helps too).
I’d planned on keeping these jeans put away until next spring so I’d have a fun light denim that felt fresh, but I never found a darker charcoal pair for fall/winter AND my husband likes them so I’m putting them back into rotation. Thoughts:I’ve been itching to try a variation on the black, camel, and leopard outfit formula from last week. This doesn’t quite follow the formula because I used charcoal and gray in place of some of the black; the overall look is softer because the contrast isn’t quite as sharp.
Textures are key to wearing any tonal outfit (especially black), and texture was the major thing I wanted to experiment with in this variation. The blazer and shorts are both wool, though different treatments; the tee is jersey; the tights are a soft knit; the boots have both leather and suede; and the scarf a fine knit with sparkly threads. I’m happy with the texture richness, but I do think these higher contrast stripes aren’t as striking as low contrast/solid black in this formula.

Thoughts: You know how everyone has a fantasy life they shop for? Mine is 80s rock star -_- The 1980s is my favorite decade (tied with the 1940s) and because I have a lot of 80s influenced items in my closet, I have to be careful that I don’t wear too many at once to avoid veering into costume territory. Since Fridays are date night and my husband dislikes 80s fashion, today I decided to keep it simple/modern and let my new (purchased in LA!) sharp shouldered red blazer be the highlight of my outfit. I have always always been drawn to the punk/metal stylings from the 70s/80s (hence all the black), something which I try to incorporate in little bits in my style. Also sporting my new doorknocker earrings purchased in LA (those bad boys are HEAVY), a slightly-over-the-top costume pearl necklace, a plastic headband, and bright red lipstick.
For fun I also did up a much more literal take on the 80s, complete with 80s metal wig (hey, the hair makes or breaks an outfit):
Vintage 80s salmon blazer, crane tee, new slouchy pleated pants (also purchased in LA), patent heels; it totally could’ve used a pile of long chains though. All of this except the blazer (which resides in my “sentimental clothing” pile) came straight from my working wardrobe. See what I mean about needing to be careful about putting too many 80s inspired items on at once? Thoughts: For a day that consisted primarily of airport/flying, it was pretty busy! I stopped by my folks’ for lunch on the way to my husband’s work, then he drove me the rest of the way to the airport. I was a bit nervous about going through security since I was bringing only a carry-on which, of course, contained my (very pared down) beauty supplies, but happily they didn’t take away any of my stuff (I’d have had to fight someone if they tried to take away my face wash and powdered dry shampoo!).
The flight itself was about 3 hours, and extremely cramped because I was sitting in between two very large guys who took up part of my seat room as well as both armrests -_- I cannot tell you how happy I was to have a blazer as part of my flight outfit; as soon as I disembarked, I popped that on and felt instantly put together.
After taking a shuttle to the hotel I excitedly met AJ and Claire, my roomies for the trip. We snapped some quick photos, then went out to dinner and gabbed away. Then returned to the hotel and gabbed away. Great start to the trip :)
Behind the outfit:Truthfully, I dislike flying because I get motion sick. I would probably have dressed down if I were not meeting AJ and Claire immediately after disembarking the plane (got a style standard to uphold ^^). So coming up with an outfit that would be stylish as well as comfortable was paramount. This definitely fit the bill, and as an added bonus the jeans, blazer and booties didn’t have to be packed (they take up a lot of room).
On the subject of beauty supplies: I like to pack light, and since it all had to go in my carry-on I brought only the essentials: lotion, face wash, dry shampoo, mascara, a couple tinted lip balm colors. I don’t use much more than that at home except on hair wash days, and I don’t plan to wash my hair on the trip so that saves a good extra bit of room.
