05.04.2012 [fri]Picture perfect challenge, Day 5: Tortoises at Dawn, Galapagos Islands by Frans LantingBacklogged outfit, added 02.12.2013.
Worn to: Type Americana 2 conference, date night (stayed in for pizza)
Behind the outfit: Today I had more constraints for my outfit than usual (to be fair, the usual is pretty much no constraints) because I attended a typography conference. I wanted to come up with an outfit that was business casual/creative and arty, as well as fit the challenge photo. So I decided what better day than to give my new slouchy AT trousers their debut! I probably should’ve attempted to iron them, though. This was the only challenge I didn’t incorporate my hair as a specific element, but I did tie it back to minimize the darkness in the outfit.
I decided to go with the hazy, surreal feeling of the photo and not do quite as literal an interpretation as many of my other outfits for the challenge. I have the color story of the photo, the fluidity of the water (pants, scarf), and the turtles (nails, necklace) all represented in various ways throughout my outfit. The blazer was necessary for business, and actually I never wore it as shown in the right side upper left photo; I DID wear it tee+scarf-blazer during the lectures, but didn’t get a photo of that combo.
Because the photo is so very serene, and was taken at dawn rather than dusk, I was more inspired by the lighter shades than the dark; I took the color palette pretty literally, going with rosy tans, taupes, and a bit of gray. It also helps that taupe is my current color obsession ^^ I didn’t have the fashion guts to wear a tucked top with these slouchy pants today, but after wearing this and being quite comfy and happy I think I’m good to tuck for next time!
I have a couple nods to the turtles in the outfit. First off, my necklace has organic hammered circles which loosely resemble the shells; second, I painted my nails a matte dark brown (as an aside, they looked like chocolate and I kept wanting to nibble), and when I hold my hands together they make a similar “S” shape as the turtles’ formation in the photo (and, you guys, I just can’t even express how entertained I was by this!).

Worn to: work, date night dinner @ Mukilteo Lodge
Behind the outfit:Earlier this month I wore a denim-on-denim + volume-on-volume look that I had mixed feelings about, but got really positive response over from the gals on YLF. So I thought I’d give it another go, but change up the proportions a bit. Swapping to a more cropped and fitted blazer really makes a difference for me, and I also prefer the short-over-long thing going on here. Much better this time around!

Behind the outfit: After yesterday’s blob-o-fabric debacle, I wanted to wear something more bodycon today! This is a springier version of an outfit I wore back in January (still enjoying experimenting with the dress-over-jeans thing AND the short-over-long thing), the base elements being the sweater dress and slim jeans.
To keep this outfit light and springy (and yet still feel appropriate for the wet and cool weather we’re actually having), I made sure not to include any additional black besides what’s in the dress. With the wet weather boots are still 100% appropriate, so I opted for this cream pair and chose to go sans socks because I like the little peek of skin there for spring. Since the ivory is low contrast against both the gray jeans and my skin, the light footwear is easily balanced; having my hair up and the sleeves pushed up helps with this as well because it minimizes how “dark” the top half appears.
Because it’s still cold enough to need a jacket (and I’m boycotting wearing real coats in hopes that warm weather will heed my protest), I added the light gray blazer. Initially I tried my white blazer, but it was too stark against the rest of the outfit. The proportions of this shrunken gray blazer also work better, and adds to the low contrast support cast to the dress.
I chose this long gold pendant to add an additional warm tone to the camel in the sweater, and its reflective surface also helps add some brightness. The rest of my accessories are all whites (pearl earrings, white watch, and white bag (which is my favorite spring/summer bag) ) to add even more brightness. I’m pretty pleased with how springy the moodier camel/black shades look when paired with soft, light colors.

Thoughts:Can I start by saying how much I love this outfit? I LOVE THIS OUTFIT SO MUCH. Even though my style covers a couple different ranges, I have to say I really feel like this embodies the essence of my style goals and the overarching “urban”-ness (though the warmer it gets, the more boho comes into my style). I hope I won’t be able to wear these boots and shorts much longer (because it’ll warm up please? *crosses fingers*) but I will definitely be wearing another variation or two of this before that happens! And, of course I can (and probably will) lose the tights and don shorter boots when it actually does warm up.
Second, LOOK it’s the sun for the second straight day! Again, if you’re in the Northern hemisphere and enjoying normal or ridiculously warm spring weather, feel free to chuckle. It’s about as warm as yesterday (so, not that warm), and because my spring/summer wardrobe is essentially the same barring a few sleeveless things, I am trying to focus on creating decidedly transitional outfits so I don’t get tired of my stuff from now until September. We’ll see how that goes though, I am straight up excited for spring.
Third, as much as I love how this scarf looks tied like this, because the silky material was so flippin’ slippery it just refused to stay put! For the photos here I have the ends loose and tucked under, muffler style, and later I tried knotting the ends too but then the knot kept sliding up into view. I think loose muffler worked better, and I just have to accept that I need to adjust the scarf as it slips.
Fourth, backlog update! Only 23 more to go ><
Backlogged outfits update: Feb 17th | Feb 18th | Feb 19th | Feb 20th
Behind the outfit:I formed this outfit around the shorts, because I’m hoping I only have a couple more wears left before it warms up too much for them (but don’t worry, I have a silky pair ready to go for warmer weather!). I thought about what footwear I haven’t yet worn with them and wanted to try before they’re put away, and these boots came immediately to mind.
From there I wanted to keep the contrast low but dark, so I chose these gray sweater tights (sadly it’s still too cold for cutout or sheer tights). I wanted to add something light on top to balance the boots, and since I was in a matchy mood I went with a taupe tee. Then I realized that this outfit could follow my current favorite spring color palette formula (twice in one week? yes, I love it that much!). Looking over my jacket choices, I first tried my white blazer but it was blindingly bright against the muted tones of the outfit. So then I debated between my brown pleather jacket or this gray blazer, and ultimately decided the cropped/shrunken shape of this one looked much sharper with the outfit.
I usually wear pendants with something like this, but I’ve been dying to wear this new scarf! At first I was worried it’d be a bit too bright/dark for the fairly muted outfit, like the white blazer was, but happily it worked perfectly; the muted tee lets the scarf really POP and it brings all the attention right up to my face. I tied it my favorite style for these oversized square silk scarves, and I think this might be my most oversized scarf so the muffler tie really works wonderfully!
The outfit was a bit dark, even with the gray jacket, so I wanted to add white accessories to brighten it up a bit. I chose my white watch (this is my spring watch, by the way, so you’ll be seeing it lots and lots) and then added these big white hoops. It’s a pretty small dose of white, but I think it did the job nicely.
And for fun, a couple outtakes of me messing with the scarf ^^

Thoughts:Soooooooo I haven’t started my xmas shopping yet. Usually I start early but this year I’m not really in the mood to shop (weird, right?) plus everyone feels extra hard to shop for this year. Tomorrow our good friends are hosting a white elephant party, and my husband and I both haven’t bought something fun to bring so we did that tonight. After that we did the dinner and movie thing, and saw Hugo which was quite good!
I must admit I actually felt a bit under dressed at the theater in this (doesn’t happen often). I think it’s because this tunic is a fairly thick cotton; a nicer material or a different print (or both) would have instantly dressed this up.
Behind the outfit:I wasn’t feeling very motivated to get dressed this morning, so I decided to wear a variation on the outfit I wore last time I wore this tunic. Instead of the furry vest I used my cropped blazer to get the same effect, and since I’m feeling a bit more rugged today I opted for my black skinnies and black boots. The outfit needed a little shine, so I picked these black pearls which also add a little girlishness; my champagne pearls probably would’ve been a better brightening option but what can I say, I dress to fit my moods ^^

Thoughts: My 1950s inspired outfit during the YLF Dress the Decade Challenge last month got me thinking about ways to incorporate a pencil skirt into outfits that are more my style than some of the more typical pencil skirt outfits. One way that really appeals to me is a brightly/unexpectedly colored one; I tried a great knit turquoise pencil skirt at Nordstrom while in LA but they only had one a size too small. I definitely like the idea, so I’ll be keeping my eye out for a woven one in a fun bright color.
And another way is to make the outfit a bit slouchier and add some rocker elements, like I did here. I’m really happy with how today’s outfit came out, I think this type of pencil skirt look feels much more my style than a 50s inspired outfit (though a rockabilly 50s outfit feels “me” like).
Behind the outfit:For today, I decided to go against the 50s vibe with an untucked sweater and slouchy buckled boots. This outfit actually started with the sweater; it’s a bit too short for most of my pants, so I thought I’d try it with this skirt and was pleasantly surprised by how much I like the slouchy sweater with the slim skirt (a silhouette I’ve only worn a handful of times). From there I had the choice to either dress it up with tights+heels or dress it down with tights+flats; I was liking the casual-cool from the sweater so I went with flat shoes and took it a step further with these slouchy boots (and new sweater tights!).
I tried several things for the accessories: first a pendant, then a statement necklace, then a colorful scarf. Ultimately I decided to play up the graphic contrast and selected this dotty scarf. To keep the monochromatic thing going and to give a bit of structure to the now overall slouchy feel, I added the gray blazer (and of course pushed the sleeves up, letting the sweater sleeves peek out for more graphic contrast). Lastly, after everything was together, I felt like adding just the smallest hint of color with the faux turquoise cocktail ring.

Thoughts: Well whatever trouble I thought I was having yesterday, I had it double today.Today’s missing item: soft blouses. Just like the ghost tunic from yesterday, this is certainly not the first time and actually I have been trying to find a few great soft blouses since March with no luck. I know most people have trouble with pants/jeans but man I have the most trouble with blouses! I must be trying on all the wrong styles.
Behind the outfit:The first Tuesday of each month I attend an informal gathering of local type enthusiasts (typographers, font designers, graphic artists, teachers, etc.); I generally try not to dress overly casual, and always aim for a smarter look because who knows when a business opportunity will present itself!
After lamenting the soft blouses I don’t have I decided if I was going to wear a tee (the pub we meet at is too warm for a sweater) I at least wanted to wear one in a color and print that I love, and happily this one also has shape to it. I initially grabbed my black skinnies but between the fact that it wasn’t raining and that I didn’t feel like dressing darkly, I swapped to my baggy flared jeans. To dress them up a bit I tried on ALL of my jackets and selected this blazer because it adds lightness to the outfit (also, interesting proportions!), then added these houndstooth heels to echo the gray. After trying several necklaces, I couldn’t decide between these two so I just wore both :)
And, you know, I’m really happy with how this turned out. Actually I love it! I think the last two days’ frustrations will ultimately lead to good insight.
