Worn to: birthday day off work! Mariner’s game, dessert at Purple
Thoughts:
For my birthday today my very sweet husband surprised me with a killer tote! I’ve been eying it for a while; it comes in sooo many delicious colors, I had the hardest time choosing between the emerald, cobalt, or tangerine. Very happy with this emerald, it’s such a gorgeous, brilliant color. We both took the day off and went to a baseball game for some relaxing entertainment (don’t worry, my choice! too bad they lost 0-3 though), followed by delicious birthday dessert.
Behind the outfit:
Today’s outfit came together out of a short list of necessities: I wanted an outfit with the Ms colors, flat comfy shoes because I knew we’d be walking quite a bit, and pants if possible. This new turquoise sweater isn’t quite the Ms shade, but it was close enough for me! It’s actually the same sweater as yesterday’s but in a size down. Because of that it loses some length, making it better suited for skirts than pants; I got around that by layering a navy tank underneath for some extra length (and a fun light-to-dark tonal gradient!). And since I’m trying to wear my jeans less I chose my black trousers instead of black skinny jeans. Added the pearl necklace for a pop of lightness (which is also echoed by the bits of exposed skin, and the white watch), and popped on my brown faux leather jacket along with a scarf for an extra layer of warmth while at the ballpark.

Behind the outfit:
I know orange is the color of the season, but I’m really feeling emerald… and even more the two of them together! This outfit started with the tee and jeans, but it was a little too much blast-of-color for my mood today. Then I was inspired to add in some gray after seeing how wonderful it looks with emerald on Kari recently. I’m definitely still off cardigans, unless they’re buttoned right up. Like a soft, knit blouse! This particular cardigan re-earned its place in my wardrobe after being paired with this very tee back in December, and I’m still enjoying the look so I repeated it again today. I chose my houndstooth flats to add another gray element to tie in with the sweater, and also add a subtle bit of pattern mixing.

Thoughts:
These trousers completely surprised me today. I haven’t worn them much since getting them last fall, for reasons unknown. Quite honestly, they turned out to be far more comfortable than jeans! Needless to say my black jeans are now officially on hiatus until fall; this shorter length also feels much more summery than my longer, scrunchy black jeans’ length.
Behind the outfit:
Today was all about The Neon Necklace! I thought it’d be fun to do a tonal look with it, so this silk blouse was an easy choice: I just don’t have anything else that could be considered “tonal” with neon lime green! I definitely enjoy pairing very saturated shades with black, and these black trousers were a must for at least one outfit this week, as one of my very few trouser options.
The logical choice to bookend my hair and extend the legline would be black or dark footwear, but in spring/summer I really enjoy wearing light footwear with dark pants. With my very dark hair, it does require a little extra effort to balance out but I like the modern effect of the light footwear here. Luckily for me, my light skin is the perfect counter so all I need is to be mindful of having a little extra skin exposed (in this outfit: forearms, a little at the neck, and the shorter pants length). I could also have pulled my hair back to minimize the amount of darkness in the outfit as well, but decided to leave it down to add a little extra softness; coupled with the dark buttons on the blouse and the black pants, it also helps establish a nice vertical line.

Worn to: @ home pie/coffee/baseball, gardening, Scuttlebutt, Lowes
Behind the outfit:
A basic weekend outfit using my favorite “spiff up a tee” outfit formula modified for a colder day, subbing in a sweater for the tee. Layering up the necklaces (or adding just one statement necklace) and popping on a jacket takes the outfit from basic casual to pulled-together casual. And if this outfit needed to be further dressed up, simply swapping these casual flat boots for dressier footwear will pull the dressiness factor up yet another level, as would a dressier jacket. An easy outfit base that can go from lounging to Lowes to lunch:
Base outfit: sweater + jeans + statement necklace

Picked up this fun pendant a couple days ago from LOFT, and this is the color combo that made me want green jeans for this season. It all feels so very crisp! I know orange is the color of the season, but I am really feeling emerald.

Thoughts:
I am not usually out and around as many people as I was today, so I was pleasantly surprised to get quite a few compliments on this outfit at almost each stop I made during the day. They were primarily on the interesting color combination, but one lady commented that the whole soft vibe was unique. Which got me thinking! Way back in February when I was looking over which trends appealed to me, “Soft Dressing” was the one I was most interested in but the urban/punk side of me tends to prefer harder-edged things. I felt super in this decidedly soft outfit and could happily wear variations of this all summer; somehow it felt urban enough. So I’m going to think about what exactly “soft dressing” would mean for my style, and experiment further with how to make it work within my style goals. Should be a fun challenge!
Behind the outfit:
Today I wanted to wear an outfit formula that I enjoyed quite a bit last summer: button-up blouse + long silk scarf tied like a men’s tie + skinny jeans + pumps. In particular, I wanted to remix the combo of my avocado silk shirt and gray super skinnies with shades of blue.
I kept the outfit base, the avocado silk blouse and gray skinny jeans, the same but this time buttoned my blouse all the way up because I’m still enjoying that look. I actually debated wearing the same teal silk scarf, but then remembered I had this peacock one waiting to be worn. I bought it way back in January, but haven’t yet worn it. My primarily-outerwear scarves are hanging on the opposite side of my room, and my silk scarves are hanging inside my closet because they’re primarily-innerwear; for some reason I had both this scarf and the orange equestrian silk scarf I bought at the same time hanging with my outerwear scarves, so I’ve just been forgetting them when coming up with outfits. Which is a shame, because they’re both quite lovely!
After deciding on the peacock scarf, I had a couple different shoe options because separate from neutrals, any shoe that picks on a color in the scarf could also work here: purple, navy, cobalt, teal, aqua, or yellow. Of course I had to go with my new cobalt pumps! I chose my navy bag because it picks up on another color in the scarf, yet also tones things down just a wee bit; the shoes and bag being somewhat matchy (both blue) helps with that. And my lemon-yellow nails pick up on yet another color from the scarf. This is definitely not a color combo for the faint of heart, but I thoroughly enjoyed wearing it!

Thoughts:
Today I went with a friend up to the outlet mall for a seasonal update of her work wardrobe, and we got her lots of great stuff! (I also got a few more spring purchases to round out my seasonal items: a striped summer dress, a floral pencil skirt, a sleeveless blouse, two summer sweaters, linen shorts, flat sandals, and two necklaces.) I love acting as a friend’s shopper, something I’ve done a few times usually for single occasions. Today was the largest wardrobe chunk I’ve helped a friend shop for, and I have to say I really enjoyed the whole process. We chatted for a bit a couple weeks ago regarding what she felt she needed, the styles she’s interested in, and the constraints of her work wardrobe. So when we went today we both had a pretty good idea of what we were looking for, and I was able to direct her to the best stores right up front; the two stores that I’d suggested as the best options (LOFT and Ann Taylor) initially got a bit of the stink eye, but we definitely found the most stuff at those two stores. And of course I did my best to be stubborn on only allowing items that fit and flattered. It was super fun to get to play pro stylist for a day!
Behind the outfit:
Comfortable, flexible, and easy to move-in/change-out-of was the order of the day. When I shop for myself, I like to wear pants because that’s what I’m wearing most of the time; whenever I shop in a skirt, I end up with shirts the wrong lengths. So my usual shopping uniform is a jeans, a tee, comfortable walking shoes, and a cross body bag.
Since I wasn’t planning on really “shopping” for myself, I decided that leggings would be best for today so that I could easily pop something on or off without using the dressing room if needed, and thus could focus more easily on helping my friend with HER trials. I have a severe lack of tunics, or dresses short enough to wear as tunics, so I was quite happy that I’d rediscovered this tee dress just a few days ago. Definitely still need a topper so I went with my denim jacket for super casualization (also the sleeves stay up nicely), though I did take it off a few times while shopping; in those cases I used my purse and strap to hold it so my hands could stay free. I decided to wear my oxfords as the comfy walking shoes because they play up the arty aspect of the outfit. And because I was happy to see the sun, my bright Kate Spade bag was an easy choice.

Thoughts:
Our good friend treated my husband and I to lunch and a supercross event down in Seattle today for hubby’s birthday. We had a great time, and some great weather to boot!

More fun photos of the day can be found here.
Behind the outfit:
I so enjoyed wearing this dress for a motorcycle ride last month, I was more than happy to don it again! This time I decided to wear my brown boots because I much prefer to have a little ankle coverage (it was scary in just the pumps last time!). Also because they’re one of my most comfortable shoes to walk around all day in and, well, that was a big part of the day. I popped my brown leather jacket on as an extra layer to tie in the boots and keep it from looking too earthy, but happily the weather was warm enough that I didn’t need it until close to sundown!
